Hi,
I really need an extra search field: I need users to choose 'new', 'used' or default to 'any'. Is there a way to achieve this? I have the designers edition and this search field is my only downfall. I'm happy to pay for a fix if necessary. ps. I am not using the 'state' or 'city' fields for my site. Perhaps I could utilise this? Many thanks, Fred |

Fred,
If you have this extra field already setup and it is also set to searchable, then it will automatically show once a category is chosen that the extra field is assigned too. -Mike

Ahhh thank you so much. I didn't realise this was dynamic. I broke the layout some how because this dynamic field was appearing off to the right of the browser. I had to horizontality scroll right to find it
Many thanks! Fred |

The reason it works this way is because you can associate extra fields to certain categories. Like mileage for cars, would make sense to have an extra field called mileage for a house. Then when someone selects cars, they would see the extra fields that apply to just that category.

Very good point. Tis also a clever system. Little too clever for my needs. I would rather my extra field be hard coded and fixed at all times. As you say, it can easily be missed as the user isn't expecting it to appear. Still, I see the benefits of dynamic and makes good sense.
Cheers for the reply, Fred |

Actually by styling the ajaxresponse in search.tpl you can highlight the dynamic fields so that even my nan wouldn't miss 'em:
<div id="ajxresponse"></div> to: <div id="ajxresponse" style="background-color:#29395e; color:#fff"></div> or whatever. Cheers, Fred |

Nice thoughts, Freddy.
But is "All" really a default to "All" ? From everything I have found out (so far), "All" is not a global default to "everything not otherwise selected" but only to some form of randomized sampling -- certainly not "ALL" which is inclusive to everything in the database, not matter which category selected or not. In Fact, because this issue is so crucial to what I am doing, I would really like the pundits and moderators here to clarify what the default "All" really means -- positive and negative. Thanks.

Category: "Search All" means the search input will be searched in "all" categories Country: "Search All" ditto -Mike

Thanks Mike. I was in fact asking about/if the search input =: " all" categories, not site content. Thank you for your clarification.

Can you clarify this please.
I have added a custom field and made it seachable I have also applied it to all my categories. However it isnt appearing in my seach page. Also on the option - seach option I cannot see this custom field. The field is appearing on the view listing but this is pretty pointless for me as I would like my users to be able to do searches based on this custom field. Thanks in advance Gary |
