Limit Number of Featured Ads per Category

Is there a way to limit the number of featured ads to X for each category so that once a category reaches X, then the user will be prompted with a message and not able to make that choice?

For example, I am the 21st person who wants to make my ad featured. But, darn, they only have 20 slots in each category. So, when I go to the "Options" and choose featured, the message says something like "sorry, the featured listings section in this category is full. You can place your ad and if a featured spot appears, you can modify your ad later."

Then, in the "modify ad" section, the user would also be checked to see if there were more than X featured listings in a category. If < X, they would be able to modify their ad. If not, they'd see the same message.

There is nothing built in that would this for you.

I'm sure that it could be done. It would require a separate sql query that counts the total active listings that are in a specific category. Then you would have to add logic into the step in the checkout to call that function.

Why would you want to do this though? You don't like collecting extra $$ from too many people?
