Default Can I change States and Countries to Cities only?

Hi everyone, thanks ahead of time for your responses. I am considering buying a 68 classifieds license. I like an active community and 68 classifieds certainly seems to have that! (+1)

My question, in the demo under settings, I see where I can edit country and state entries but my classified site will be state specific so all is need is a pull down for cities.

I could not find a way to edit or delete these fields and change them to saying "City". Is this possible? And if so, will it be something a newbie can tackle?

thanks!

You can not delete those fields, however as you will learn while using 68 Classifieds, that it allows you to have control over just about every aspect of what you want to do whether to display it, require it, etc..

Pretty much any of these fields can be set as to whether they are shown and/or required in the different sections of the administration. You might require them, say in user registration, however not show them at all in the viewing of your listings.

Depending on what and where you are referring to the use of these fields will also affect how and/or whether you want to use them. For instance, let's say that you want to run a real estate site. Obviously in a case such as this, the realtor (seller) may register and their account may have the city of "My town", however they would have listings in, "Your Town", "Timbuktu" and "Timbuk3", in which case you would probably want to set up an extra field to use in the appropriate categories called "city" (not to be confused with the city field in the user's registration).

You may want to spend a little bit more time exploring the administration demo as well the online documentation for 68 Classifieds too.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the quick response. So then am I to understand that if I am for example running a Texas classifieds website and I want registered users to only have the options to categorize their listing as their closest metropolitan city: Austin, Corpus, Dallas, Houston, Etc. I will not be be able to do this?

Or could a work around be that I hide "country" and "state" in the listing options and create another category for "city" which would be a required field?

How many ways are there to make a snowball? Oh wait... You're from Texas... How many ways are there to make a margarita?

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by, "categorize their listing as their closest metropolitan city: Austin, Corpus, Dallas, Houston, Etc."

When you place a listing (A seller), the first step of the process is to select the category to place their listing in.

The advanced search allows you to search by city (this would be the city field in the seller's account) for all current listings. If you create an extra field also called city AND set it to be searchable, this can also be used in the advanced search.

You can make an extra field that is required. The user would then have to choose 1 of the city values you created for the field. After this you could use this field to search for listings and have the value display with the listing.

I made an example in the demo, not sure how long it will stay there

Custom coding to do that by putting in states and countries into an extrafield within a dropdwon. In this example, the owner only wanted to have 3 states with certain areas defined. He also wanted them independent from the registration address because many people sell items with a different location to where they live i.e real estate, boats, etc. The principal is the same where the list can be made up of the locations you wish. whether in search or in the registration process. This example even separates registration address from advertised item address. It is worth mentioning that as so many people wish to do that.
