Hi,
I cannot find anything on the forums but I may be using the wrong 'search terms' so if there is already an answer online, please point me in the right direction and im sorry.

My question is can we limit new users by a region either using the location they enter (yes I know it can be fudged) or an ip address.

There is not anything built into the script for that. What is your goal? Are you trying to not allow new users to register if they aren't from a specific state or region?

Basically the owner has been bombarded with spammers sending emails to all the users and the owner asked if its possible to block the spammers (usually from outside Australia - the target audience).

I think the only short term practical solution is not to allow automatic registration and monitor your users. Your hosting provider may be able to help you ban ranges of IP addresses - worth asking them. Finally there are small scripts that can be used to ban ip addresses from viewing your web site. Google to find them.

The first things that I would ask is if you set set some of the built in protections available within the script that can help in reducing spam.

1. Have you activated the Captcha module? (or the Free ReCaptcha module?)
2. Have you set the "Guest" user group to not allow email a friend?

The bad apples that are spamming the customers are probably coming from certain countries. You can google IP Ranges for specific countries.

Depending on your hosting provider you can ban those IP ranges from accessing your site. Some hosting providers have somthing such as an "IP Deny Manager" to help with this cause. It may work for you.

My site is very locality specific and I had a similar problem. So I used my hosting provider's tool mentioned above to block IPs from the country that was presenting the problem and it worked well for me.

I believe it's possible to block IP ranges from your htaccess file as well. But I haven't tried that method, so don't take my word for it.

Thanks guys, I like the sound of blocking IP addresses from these certain 'spam' countries/ places...

Now the hardest task is to get in contact with the hoster and get the option available to us.
