Default Determine Broadband Users From Dial Up Users

Hi,
In my new design i have a large header image. On my 1.5mb connection it still only takes 2 or so seconds to entirely load the whole front page.
I want it so if the user has a fast internet connection they get a larger high quality header image, but if they are on a low speed connection they get a low quality image.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Nick

You might be able to set a cookie containing the current time then redirect to another page. Then collect the cookie and see the difference. Then based on how long it took you can get some idea of the connection speed. PHP isn't the ideal tool for that task.

What might be simpler would be to display the reduced quality image, text, or other image and javascript preloading the large one and switch once it is done. Maybe even transition it or have the image switch once the page is loaded. You might be able to increase the speed it is displayed by cutting it up into smaller pieces and just pushing them together in the html.

Thanks for the reply.
I guess its just not worth it.

Do you happen to know of a way to make you internet dial up speed? maybe a "dial up" proxy? I would like to test how fats my site is if you are on dial up.

never mind found this.
Sloppy - the slow proxy for dial-up modem speed simulation (slow down)
