Default Keywords in Google

I've read previous posts on this subject and I'm not sure if my situation quite fits in the same square, so I thought I'd ask again in my own words. Sorry to be repetative......

I've created a google webmaster tools account. I've verified my site, added a sitemap successfully, the home page has been crawled successfully and the index status is good, google analytics is good.

I'm also not too keen on the 80+ (out of 87 total) useless keywords GoogleBot has drummed up. The keywords we've entered into the admin area of 68Classifieds - do we need to have those keywords in the text somewhere on the home page or do we embed them in code somewhere? If so, where? And doesn't the sitemap provide enough info for Google to crawl my site accurately?

Just curious.

Thanks for your time

I am not an seo expert by any means but I think they actually pick up keywords from the text it finds on the page. So that may be the reason.

Do the key words (in paragraph format) need to be on the home page or can I embed them into a deeper page like FAQ?

Here is what I was thinking of pasting in....

Finally! A comprehensive Horse Classifieds Website. Are you in need of HorseOptions ? Looking for another horse directory to post your horse classifieds ad ? Whether you are looking for equines & horses, horses for sale, horses for lease, horse services (such as boarders, ferriers or vets), tack, trailers, equipment or anything and everything horse related; or you are wanting to advertise the same, we've got horse options.

What do you think?

To me, that looks like a paragraph to promote your keywords.

Quite frankly, Google hardly pays any attention to keywords anymore for ranking. I'm not an SEO expert by any means, however I do know this to be true.

If you are simply just trying to raise your rankings in search with Google, then I would concentrate on getting links into your site from other "quality" sites, get and keep fresh content especially on your home page.

You have 26 keywords listed. That's too many. Generally you want to keep it much lower and any of the keywords listed should also be in the content. Also, you don't need to have your website url listed as a keyword.

Mike,

Too many keywords - does that do more harm than good as far as Google is concerned? I'm also trying to get our site seen by keywords & not just our site name...this is no longer important to Google?
And gettings links into our site from other quality sites - you mean to say put our link on their site vs vice versa?
Thanks for the input. More please.

Yes, too many keywords will do you more harm than good. It's known as "Keyword Spamming" which is one of the reasons that keywords aren't as important to Google for search results anymore.

Yes, links from other "quality" sites linking to your site is one of the highest considerations that Google uses in it's ranking algorithms.

Forget about meta-keywords. Dont waste your time. It is completely ignored by Google for several years already. As Mike said, concentrate on content and links, links, links

Yes, Yahoo itself claimed 1.5 year ago (not sure about now) that they still support keyword meta-tag. However it is very hard to believe for several reasons:

1. It is absolutely not make any sense to support it because unscrupulous webmasters could easily place false keywords in it.
2. It tested 100 times by myself and millions times by thousands of other webmasters and SEOs that having meta-tag keyword has absolutely no effect on positions in SERPs. May be Yahoo use it for some other purpose.

IMO the ROI for spending time on keyword meta-tag is little to none.
