Default upgrade failure v4.2.2

I tried to upgrade last night from 4.1.6 to 4.2.2... it didn't work. The new version resulted in several problems, so I re-uploaded my backed up previous version files til I get it worked out...

But now all the pictures are messed up and cut off. Any advice on what could be going on would help. I'll provide more details later this evening.

There may have been a problem with the upload. Try uploading the 'photos' folder from your backup again.

What ftp application are you using?

I'm using Filezlla. I'll try to re-upload the photos... here in Greensboro, NC the storms have knocked out most folks power. no fun when upgrading!

Okay here is what is happening:

The backed up files are totally normal, but when they are uploaded to the server they become distorted and fubar-ed. I've run a test and uploaded the normal working pics to the 'image' folder, then downloaded then back to my computer from the server and they come back all messed up.

Also, I was testing things out on the website and tried to list a new item for sale and when uploading the pics I get this message:

Not enough permissions

File photos/esglfront_1302055212.jpg can not be created,
Set the permissions of the parentmap correctly
Please correct and try again

The following folders should be chmod'ed to 777:

catimages
Connections
license
photos
templates_c
thumbs
uploads

Thanks Blair, I set them to 777 on install & re-checked them.

I finally re-installed v4.1.6 via these steps:

1. Cleaning out my public_html
2. Doing a fresh v4.1.6 install from the 68c .zip file
3. Run installation, everything goes smooth on install.
4. When I go to the live site and admin login, I get fatal error
5. I replace the new includes/classes folder with my old backed-up includes/classes v4.1.6 files
6. Now everything works!
7. I update the Connections folder files with my backed-up database info
8. Now everything works and I have all the previous data... back to where I began!

So again I try to run the upgrade to 4.2.2, the upgrade appears to go fine and is completed...
but I get the same fatal error results via the front end and admin.

So then I repeat steps 1-8 above to get back to where I began.

I've talking to my hosting provide, and am upgrading to php v5. They said there's likely something in the new v4.2.2 68c code that is compressing the images and maybe other files after uploading to the server.

Weird, wild stuff.

Are you uploading the images from your backup to your v4.2.2 installation with your ftp application? If so, the 68C script plays no part in that process.

Check your Filezilla preferences. Make sure the upload setting is set to "Auto" and not "ASCII". Reference

Blair, I think you got it, under another thread it suggested switching to asc and I never switched back! that's to source of the image distortion I'm pretty sure. thanks!

The upgrade is still not working... but I've not upgraded to php5.2 on the server yet, so I'll have to wait to see if that is the issue with the upgrade failure.

Lindsay - in its current form, v4.2.2 will not work with a PHP version less than 5.2.3 -
We accidentally included a parameter in one use of htmlspecialchars that's only supported by 5.2.3.

So, you can either:
- upgrade your PHP version to something greater than 5.2.3
OR
- make the change as outlined in John's post here

The upgrade to php 5.2 on the host server solved all the issues. Thanks for everyone's help.
