Default Show Subcategory Ads in Parent Browse Categories Pages

This is how my pages currently look when you click on a Parent Category from the Home Page Browse Category List, (a parent category which has subcategories.)

Picture 2.png

Right now it shows all listings from the site below the browse categories box, with a date posted sort order.

I would not like all the listings showing. I would just like those that belong to all the subcategories within that Parent Category

( basically the same result that you would get if you searched for ads in the Parent Category with the addition of a browse categories box on top.)

Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm using v4.1.5 developer

Thanks

I have seen a few requests for this functionality and I am pretty sure the answer has been covered here before, sorry I dont have the link.

And everytime I see this request, I can help but wonder WHY you would want your site to behave like that?

If your site is properly laid out with subcats I am not going to click on the housing parent cat and scroll through it when I can drill down to commercial property and look for space ifs thats what I am interested in. Same goes for room mates etc.

Laying out how a site works is all about ease for the customer which means designing and laying things out so they make sense and are easy to use.

With that in mind, I would have to ask myself why would commercial property and room mates be under housing? Also, if you have adequate subcats for your target audience then why allow posts in housing at all? Why not force people into a subcat that applies?

Just some food for thought.

The only answer that I've found going through the forums is how to get ALL the ads, not just ads belonging to the Parent Category.

By having this functionality the user is using the Browse Category box more as a drill-down tool or a search narrowing tool. And breadcrumbing just allows you to expand back up your search.

For instance this is how we do our Entertainment Listings searches...

Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST | Events | Museums, Galleries, Art Exhibits

If anyone has the answer, it would be much appreciated.

I can understand if the parent cat and the subcats all have similar content but honestly I still dont see the purpose. If I am looking for commercial property I am not going to wade through the house cat which displays commercial property, along with room mates, etc etc. It doesnt make any sense for me to do that.

Have you looked at this thread?

Technically the answer is here at the end of the thread but I can only agree with Larry. We can easily fall into the trap of focussing too much on widgetery and not enough on the end customers. The success of your site goes in this order: your business plan, your marketing plan, a clear site which gets information to people efficiently, effectively, frugally and then it is widgetry. This may seem a bit frank but it is the truth. It does rub against the grain a little I admit. Make it simple for your customers. Only give them what they need. If there is no "synergy" between the subcategroies it is pointless to do this. All you are doing is supplying redundant information which they have to process. I can give you a good example. I want to buy a Porsche. I want a 911 to be specific. So I don't want the site to promote a Mercedes to me. It will just annoy me. I am not a wanton shopper LOL. In some cases it makes sense but in yours it doesn't appear to. Apologies for being direct but I am trying to help.

I got it. Thank you all. I just hadn't allowed the parent categories to accept ads... which I didn't really want to do but it is a welcome compromise. Thanks again.

Where is the setting to "not allow ads posted in parent categories?"

Answer to the question of why use this configuration...

If you have a site with only a few ads, it makes it easier for the end user to find ads. Example: If you only have 10 ads in the housing main category, it would be easier for the end user to scan through those ads, then hit the sub menus.

I did that, I just thought there may be a universal setting (don't allow ads in parent categories).

I've looked at both the links in this thread and it seems like they're addressing adding all of the listings to the category page, and not just the listings for the subcategories of that category.

I'll read them again, and any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
