I've checked the .tpl files for the automated emails but have yet to find where I can customize the text? Where can I do that?

They are the template files in your template folder/emails folder.

Please post your 68 Classifieds type (Designer, Developer), version (4.0.x, 4.1.x) and template in your postings asking for help. This information will help you get better answers for your posts. A great place to do this is in your signature!

I see those files in the emails directory but they do not include any text that I can edit, only code?

The email is sent in html format, so in the emails directory you will see html code, which you are able to edit in a WYSIWYG editor such as frontpage or dreamweaver.
