I added the quicksearch module and it's just what I needed. However, the display is rather clunky with the line breaks and hr in them. I'd like to remove that but I can't find the page to do it and wonder if it's possible with the design edition. If not, I'll have to make do but I'd sure like to make it look a little cleaner!

Since it's a module, then you should have full access to it's templates. If not, then I would suggest contacting the developer of the module.

You can edit the module's template to any design you want.

Open/edit:
modules/quick_search/templates/searchform.tpl

Thanks. I thought it was pulling the default search in there. Got it working just like I want now.

Yes it is pretty much a clone but just available everywhere. Also to diable it on search page see here: modifying the quick search bar
