Recently have been having problems with "Remember My ID" login not working. I've performed a couple modifications to improve SEO that might explain this new wrinkle; canonized the domains, putting a permanent 301 redirect from www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com, and inserting 'robot detecting' code into includes/init.php for turning off sessions IDS ONLY for search enging bots. Have the base URL in the admin control panel set as www.mydomain.com.
In an attempt to solve the problem, I've rolled both of these changes back, and yet logins are still not being remembered when going to the front page of the site. When clicking on "My Account", however, immediately brings up the account home page showing that the user is logged in, so this is confusing to the user. The "not logged in" navigation menu appears when first bringing up the site, whether using www.mydomain.com or mydomain.com. We need to have the front page of the site remember the user's login, but I can't figure out why the persistent login cookie is not being picked up when signing on to the home page. I think I need to reset sessions lengths, but am not sure where to do that. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Can you check your browsers cookies and make sure you see them being set?

Yes, I've done thorough testing of the IE7 settings for cookies to see what happens when accessing the front page; the prompt window comes up for accepting a cookie when that feature is turned on in the browser. I have even entered my domain into the "Always Allow" filter control. It is also happening in Firefox.
Closing out the browser and opening a new window, pulling up the website from either www.mydomain.com or mydomain.com results in not logged in status being detected by the browser. What else should I be looking at?
