Default Copying a site , same domain

Heres the deal...

When I built this site I built it on the live site, I never used a development install as I guess most of you do.

Now the site is live and I need to make some changes, I want to "Copy the site" as it is to another directory, still on the same domain.

This "copy" is to become the development site for testing mods etc.

My question is, will this method of copying the site work without putting my live site at risk ?

-Create a directory called /development in the root
-Copy ALL the site files to this directory
-Database....I figure I just create a new database and backup the live one and restore it to the dev one ? There is obviously other steps I need to take here...

I figure I need to change the database info in /Connections/classifieds.php also

Any advice please ?

Cheers

That all sounds good to me - the only other thing you need to do after you install the dev site is to login to admin and change the dev site's URL. This is in the main stettings.

You may also want to password protect this dev site and directory to keep search bots out otherwise you may find Google providing links to your dev site.

Thanks Chas,

All has gone well up untill I try and login to the NEW dev site ADMIN.

Im getting the hash key error.

Hash incorrect. Please delete the file license/key.php and reload this page. If that does not work please contact 68 Classifieds for support.

I thought that the license key was for a domain ? Im on the same domain, just a different directory.

Do you think I should do as it says and delete the license/key.php file on the NEW dev site and try again ?

I just want to make sure this wont kill my live site before doing anything.

Cheers

You should be able to just delete the license/key.php file. Then let it auto-regenerate.
