Default User Registration Options

I'm working on an auto classifieds site. A lot of people like to include their information where they can be contacted directly but others don't

How hard would it be to modify the user registration form in order to have a check box after: phone and email that would allow the user specify if they would like to have the phone number and email address displayed in their listings?

I know there would be more to it than modifying the template and I don't have the developer editon. If this modification was fairly simple to do with the developer edition it might be a good reason for me to upgrade.

You could do it with a module so you wouldn't need to upgrade unless you really wanted to.

What I would do is make a module to add a new extra field and then just check for the value of that field in showlistings. In the next release the hooks to allow this should be in place. I have a module that does something like this already in the works. (It just adds a new registration field to be displayed in various locations, but it woudn't be hard to just check for the value of that field and display another field or not.)

If you can't wait for the next version you could always upgrade and add in a couple of lines at userjoin.php and viewlisting.php.

I'm not sure that I would be able to make a module from scratch but I usually can look at the work of others and change the code to suit my needs. I assume you will be selling the module your refer to that you are working on so I might be able to take it and get it to do what I want. IF I couldn't would you be willing to make the changes?

I might be able to wait for the next version if I had some idea on when that will be. Any ideas on when that would be? Is there a timetable somewhere for upgrades or progress toward them?

Thanks for your help!

The simplest thing to do may be to turn off the default fields so they are not visible to everyone and then just create extra fields for e-mail, phone etc and make them optional so people can opt to fill them in.

What I post here should be used only as a guide to point you in the right direction. If the code I post doesnt make any sense or work as posted then you should spend more time reading the various manuals and tutorials so it does make sense and you can tweak it to work. A sure fire way to get yourself in trouble is to implement changes you dont have an intimate understanding of. Im happy to help, but I am not here to teach you to code or create your site for you.

Yes, I'd modify it for you if this is the route you decide to go. It would be open source at anycase so you could do it as well.
