Default Existing site revamp

Hi Guys,

We are redeveloping one of our existing sites (made with 68c 4.0.9), with the latest version (4.1.6) and a new template, features etc...

As our site is very busy, we wish to develop on another domain (it's ok, we have a legal temporarily spare 68c license for it). We are doing it this way so we can ask for comments from some of our regular users, before we go live with it.

What I am wanting to do ideally, is use some of the ads (say 100) from the regular site on the newly developed site to give clients a feel for the new version.

Is this possible at all? Bearing in mind my knowledge of mysql syntax is extremely limited!

Or perhaps a way for the new site to read the database (and images) from the current site with read-only permissions?

I am guessing not, just a shot in the dark really.

Many thanks

Why not just put it on a subdomain for testing - the license is then valid. You will need a fresh database for this subdomain as it will be version 4.1.6 and your other site is not.

The issue isn't the license, we do have a spare for a project we haven't started yet. So we are going to use that one until the site is live, then use the original license for the new design and the spare can go back to start a new project.

The issue, we have, is giving a decent sample of ads from the existing site so users can not just try it populated, but populated with a lot of their actual content.

I am guessing it is not an easy task, so I'll have to do it manually.

Oh, wait...

Maybe I should switch my brain on. How about backing up the existing database, installing a fresh 68c 4.0.9, migrating data over, then performing 4.1.6 upgrade on that.

The only issue I see is migrating (or duping) a 68c install from one domain to another. Is it fairly easy? They are actually on the same server, just different domains and ip's

That would be the best bet to duplicate the existing and then upgrade it. You will need to change the domain name in the admin table though.
