Default Image upload errors

Hi

I am having issues with images not uploading. Users are getting the error saying 'file size exceeds allowed limit'. I understand the error and the cause of it, but what I don't understand is that in the admin panel i have set the 'maximum kbytes the upload can be' to 6000, and the max image height and width to 5000 each.

users have been having problems, I try and upload a 4.8 MB photo, and it wont upload, saying file size is too large. I then called my webhost to see if it was a memory issue, in which he uploaded a file phpinfo.php onto my site. In that readout, it says the max upload limit for my site is 2MB. I asked if he could change that. I was told the upload limit is part of my program, thus in the 68c admin panel.

A little help please as it says 6MB in the admin panel but 2MB in my phpinfo stats.

I am running Sigma Series layout and v4.2.0 Designer 68c.

Cheers
Steve

Several potential reasons or causes. If you search the forum you will find possible solutions. Search on 'upload memory'. The issue is probably that your server is not set up to run the amount of memory needed for the script + the images (compression/decompression etc) . If you are on a poor shared hosting plan you will not be able to even change php settings to use more memory.

Seriously, if your web hosting support person actually told you that, you need a different tech support representative or a different web hosting service.

Although you can set the limitations in the admin of 68 Classifieds, that can only limit what is already available in php. It can't change the php settings on your WEB HOST SERVER nor allocate more than what is set in php.

As you have already seen in the phpinfo, your upload size is limited to 2MB. So you need to either set your limit in the admin to that or less OR your web host needs to allocate more.

Honestly, allowing your users to upload 6MB images is probably not a good idea, especially if you allow multiple images per listings. You would be hard pressed to find a shared web host that would allow that large of an allocation.

Ya, that was what I was just about to say. If you allow 6mb files and then allow 6 photos, that ad will take up 36mb. That is a lot of disk space and in my opinion it is not worth it. My limit is 2mb and I only had a few complaints for 350+ users. I re-directed these people to image resize web sites and image compression web sites.

Pretty much what I advised you in the PM yesterday. Just set a reasonable size in the control panel and throw this hosting provider in the bin where they belong.

Thanks for the info everyone. I also did some research and looked into creating a php.ini file which allows for me to change the max upload size and memory.

I agree, I want to reduce the size of my photo allowance, good idea putting a link to a website that can reduce them, any tips on good ones to use?

In terms of my host. I agree that they are useless and am looking into a change, especially when their tech department told me the wrong thing. They are local servers, but they ain't even that fast and reliable.

I must be wrong, but I though when images were uploaded, their sizes are automatically reduced (compressed) as set in the image setting of the Admin panel?

AFTER they are uploaded the images are resized. It cant resize and image that isnt on the server and you cant get it on the server if the server settings are so restrictive you cant upload the file.

Even if you get past that problem, my guess is that they also have the memory setting allowed for PHP to use set rather small as well. In order for the image to be resized once uploaded it needs to be uncompressed, this can take a LOT of memory which your provider likely isnt going to give you.

Thanks Larry

I have changed the max upload limit on the server from 2MB to 5MB which gives me some breathing room and reduced my max upload limit on the site to 4MB, all is running much better now. It will be interesting to see how the memory holds up under a load.
