What sort of settings have you tried with the image upload settings? Have you tried using a different upload component (as defined on the Image Settings page in admin?)

I'm having the same issue. Tinkering with the image max settings and thumbnail settings doesn't seem to fix it. The problem only occurs on the home page with the thumbnails. The view listings page show the thumbnail properly. I;m using the Evo-black template from templatecodes. Any suggestions?

Matt

Here is the reality. Whatever settings you prescribe for images, your customers will do different. If you make settings which favor portrait, your customers will enter in landscape and visa versa. There is no way round this issue because there is no trim for example. The best you can do is to advise your customers in big bold letters what will look best. Say something like portrait with dimensions 2 high and 1 wide or whatever. Put it in the checkout step where images are uploaded as an advice. Some people even offer a link to scale and trim images online so advertisers get the idea of what they need to do.

That all being said, if you wish to adjust the css horizontal listings on the home page then you will need to make adjustments to the following files. The dimensions are independent of the settings for showlistings and viewlistings as many people want to make quite large thumbnails for example but only on the home page:

modules/custom_plugins/css/style.cs - this controls the box dimensions, text height etc
modules/custom_plugins/plugins/function.css_listings_horizontal.php - the image sizes are set here along with a number of parameters.

There's no "right" or "wrong". You just have to play with the settings and decide what looks the best.

Something I noticed when I visited your site, Bretto.... a lot of the thumbnails looked great! The thumbnail I remember not looking so good was a guy jumping the wake on a wakeboard. I think the reason that particular thumbnail looked bad is because the photograph incorporated a photography technique called "depth of field". Looks good fullsize but doesn't shrink well.

Thanks for the direction, seymourjames. Tweaking the files you mentioned I was able to get them to appear as I want and there will be continuity between them since I'll be using the same camera and settings. I can see how if different users uploaded their own pictures how it would be challenging to get consistency. Fortunately, in my case, I'm using the software to sell my own products so I create all of the listings and upload all of my pictures.

Good stuff - you are in that fortunate position of having total control.
