Question Nameserver redirection problem - any advice/help apreciated

Hi all,

I have just signed up for the hosted package for one of my domain names - it is a ccTLD, .is for Iceland. I seem to have hit a problem and wonder if anyone here might be able to help.

When I try to redirect the nameservers to NS.RACKSPACE.COM and NS2.RACKSPACE.COM the isnic.is system is seemingly running a test on the nameservers and I get the following message:

--------------------------------
Domain mysite.is will now be tested for compliance with the ISNIC technical requirements. The domain's setup on nameservers ns.rackspace.com ns2.rackspace.com is being tested.
Please note that this can take a few minutes. The results will be published below.

Testing in progress .. please be patient ..

Testing done.

Unable to submit requested changes
Test results for "NS.RACKSPACE.COM":
Time To Live (TTL) for the NS records must be 86400 seconds (24 hours) or longer (Is now 300 sec)
Test results for "NS2.RACKSPACE.COM":
Time To Live (TTL) for the NS records must be 86400 seconds (24 hours) or longer (Is now 300 sec)

-----------------------------------------------------

Has anybody any idea what this message means?

I have created a 'ticket' to support on this and emailed isnic.is to see if they have any explanation - but it is the weekend and I doubt if I will get any joy for for at least several days yet from isnic.is, and I am not sure that Support here will be able to help on this one.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Bill

That is certainly an odd message and test from your registrar.

The purpose and function of nameservers is solely to take a URI and convert it to an actual IP address where the service for the requested item is, whether it is for email, website, ftp, etc. By default a domain registrar will make entries into it's Name Servers db for those services to it's own IP addresses that it assigns at it's discretion.

Although it is usually recommended that you use the name servers at your hosting site, it is not necessarily required. Therefore, you should be able to use your registrars name servers and point them to the IP address where your services are located. This will at least allow you to get the functionality for your internet services going for now until you get this straightened out.

You should have received this IP address in the information email sent to you from the hosting services when your account was setup. In addition, you can still access your site and services bypassing the name servers by using the direct IP address along with the directory path for your hosting account. (ex: http://12.124.126.33/~myaccount/page.html)

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Mike-N-Tosh,

Thanks for the quick response, it is really appreciated.

Support here have acted really quickly (and it is a weekend and a holiday period) and made some alteration to try and help, unfortunately this does not seemed to have worked at the moment but hopefully those nice people at ISNIC will reply to my email request in a couple of days and explain what is happening (I hope anyway).

I tried using the IP log by the way as you suggested but at the moment all I am getting is a 404 message, no doubt this will all be resolved fairly soon.

It just seems to be a case of twiddling my fingers until ISNIC get back to us or their system recognises the changes in the TTL.

Once again many thanks for your help.
