Default hmm - the golden question - how to get ads on your site

It's been a combination for me.

I've been doing lots of letterbox drops - close to 5000 flyers have gone out so far. Giving away a prize has certainly helped, especially getting people to vote on what prize they want - makes them feel involved. And I've been checking out any forums I can find local to my area - sports, pets, hobbies, cars, real estate. I do a little direct emails as well, but basically, I always have flyers on me, and always leave them were possible - on cars for sale on the side of the road, on seats on buses - trains. It all sounds like hard work but once you start getting a few ads on - it starts rolling as people tell people and the flow on effect takes over.

I have signed up for Google Ads as well, which has been bringing in plenty of people. Of course - you pay for that one.

All I can suggest is keep plugging away and just make you site as easy to use as possible, and eye-catching - it all helps. I've gotten so much feedback saying my site is so easy to use - and certainly targetting one area has helped as well - not being nationwide.

It not been an overnight thing either. I did launch the site last year in October and nothing really happened. Then in Feb this year I had some new ideas and decided to facelift the site. Got together as much stuff as I could find around the house to put up for sale, asked familty and friends and at re-launch had about 35 Ads on there - probably just enough to show it had potential. I also got in the habit of emailing everyone who registered, thanking them for registering and nicely asking them to pass the word around.

Hope this gives some insight.

From small things ... big things grow ....

"In Wellington, Sam Morgan convinced all his friends and family to list goods they wanted to sell on Trade Me, revved up his '72 lime-green Holden and cruised the streets of Wellington to push photocopied flyers through letterboxes."

I think the key to any success is loving what you do and having pride in your work. Money may be a motivator too, I dont personally agree that money is not an important subject but I do think there should be a healthy balance between offering quality service and taking money for it. My biggest joy is when I am able to continue doing stuff that I like while not worrying about essential money.

I started my site recently and visitors are still scarce, so far my partner and I have distributed flyers, given away freebies and got some other sites to refer to us. It is a battle but nevertheless its fun and all part of the growing pains of making a site known. Just keep going is my motto.

Default The previous post is correct

I've recently implemented the code changes as referenced in the previous post in this thread.

It works well, and I'm very happy with the way it looks (I've added a few of my own changes) however there are a few issues that need to be sorted out. The main one is that if a user doesn't add an image title you will run into problems - the image will open in a new window - not in the image portion of the viewlisting. I have implemented Juven's fix which will bring up a warning window notifying the user to add an image title, but I'm still getting probably around 1 in 8-9 new listings going on without an image title - don't really know how they are getting around it. I'm still investigating this but no clues yet. I am checking my mySQL database regularly and adding image titles manually if needed.

Good luck .......

Hi Bucketman

I'm still getting my head round this

BUT I'm ONLY useing the new beta version.

I have only just got this script and did not want to start on the old script for all my mods.

In the new beta you can make them put in the add details so did not use
Juven's fix.

BUT I had some faults with how I put it in the viewlistings part.
I get the photo's come up ok and I can mouse over them all ok
BUT all the details have gone all I get is
--- ////---used for place holding larger photo////
then the photo
then under that
---- ///right side slide and small images////

Hmmmmm must have got something wrong some where.

Now also I have put back my default/test folder and cannot get it back to how I had the defaults.

It keeps bring up the NEW part and not the default/test template folder.
Strange thing is if I goto admin and set the template folder to default it gives me the defaults all ok.

I have copyed the defaults folder to my defaults/test folder But still get the details missing.

Oh Oh

Oh Oh
Arrrrrrrrrrrr I have found out why it was not working after I had put back all the default folder test.

After doing a search I found that the fault was in the folder
templates_c/viewlistings.tbl.php. that is why it kept coming back with the fault.

I deleted that file and all was ok again

WHAT is the folder "templates_c"?

Is this a copy of the templates?

Smarty compiles your template files and places them in the templates_c folder. When making changes to templates it is a good idea to visit the maintenance section of your administration and delete the compilited templates or manually delete them. That way you can be sure that isn't causing problems.
