Arrow Four Sites, One Database

Well, we're 98% finished with our 4 new 68Classifieds sites. They each use a somewhat modified Fluid template and share the same database.

They are fairly active sites with over 1000 agricultural related ads in 16 categories. We use no paid advertising like Adwords. AgAds.net has been active since 1999 and the others have been added over the years. We started with cgi/perl software and migrated to Esvon's php script in 1993. 68 Classifieds is our third and, I hope, final migration.

Things to do:
Do a Sold! modification (this is a necessity and I can't imagine a classifieds site with it)
Buy and install the Pedigree mod
Minor modifications of the sidebars
Re-work the footer

The main purpose of these sites is to make money. There is a heavy emphasis on Adsense and Featured Ads to the detriment of the aesthetics of the sites, but life is full of trade-offs.

The links are in my sig. I'm interested in your suggestions.

Well done Macon; You have the right way - its business and not just design.

How easy was it to share the same database for multiple sites? I'm possibly looking at doing the same, the only difference is the sites would all be within the same domain. For instance, website.com/location1 and website.com/location2

Thanks

I seen that post, but it wasn't clear if the question was resolved.

So..all I would need to do is change the following in the includes/classes/kernel/Core.php file..?

HTML Code:
define("URL", 'http://www.mysite.com');
define("URLS", 'https://www.mysite.com');

Correct, but you also have to choose a site for the ads to be placed on, that way all the photos are on the same domain. Then in your showlistings and viewlisting pages you define the url for the picture locations.

Hi Nick
I take it each site obviously has a complete 68C install, but when someone comes to any of the sites which are sharing the db and want to buy an ad for that theme, your statement above connects the pictures with the sites they originated from, correct?

The
PHP Code:
define("URL"'http://www.mysite.com');
statement points everything to the main db address, right?

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi,
I have one install, then copied all the files from that install to all the other domains, all sites redirect to the main site when they go to place an ad. All ads apear on all sites. They are really just all there for seo.
The define("URL", 'http://www.mysite.com'); is so where in admin you set the url for the site, can be unique for every domain.

I see. Perhaps I was overcomplicating the matter from how you said it. However, if I already have a main site and I am just copying IT over, then the define("URL", 'http://www.mysite.com'); sttement you mentioned ONLY is int the core.php file so it automatically gets copied. It is in the showlistings and viewlistings files which have to state what the MAIN site URL is, correct?

Aha!!
