Default Front end user problem & sub-domain licence question

Sorry, I meant to post this as a new post but made a mistake and accidentally posted it as a reply in the "Examples of Sites..." thread. Couldn't fine a delete button so perhaps a mod can get it out of the thread for me.

I'm looking for software to give me a quick and easy way to set up a new classified advertisement and announcements site for a large, distinct but localised target market. 68 Classified looks promising.

I messed about trying out the front end side of the demo. Placed a couple of free ads.

1. I found the text I put in the Short Description field did not show up on the ad. Only the text in the Description Field. What is the first description field for? Can I change the way this works for my clients?

2. When I modified my test ads I found I had to re-order before they would publish again. Does this mean an advertiser can't modify his ad without paying again (if it's a paid-for ad). Can this be modified by the administrator?

Tried to find a place in the admin side where these things could be adjusted but didn't see anything.

3. I need to reach people with announcements relevant to a number of distinct separate geographical regions. Is it permitted to buy one license and run 68 Classifieds on numerous regional sub-domains, for instance, "www.region1.myadsdomain.com",
"www.region2.myadsdomain.com", etc. Or perhaps in sub-directories, "www.myadsdomain.com/region1"

Also it's not clearly spelt out, but I'm assuming software purchase is by download. Am I right? If so, how big is the download? I've moved to a place where ther's no broadband. It is coming to our village within a few weeks, but we're working slowly on dial-up for the moment.

Would appreciate any clarification. Thanks

This if really kind of an optional field and can be turned off. You can display ads under categories by 1 of 2 templates and the short description by default only shows up in the second template. The listing template you use to display these ads is set within admin.

In admin its probably set to require admin auth after an ad is set. This is a yes/no option in admin.

Yes, you can run the sctip on multiple subdomains with a single license.

Many thanks for that.

Any idea how big the download is for the Designer version?

Where? I've looked all through 'Front End Settings' and 'User Admin Settings' but I just can't see how to enable viewlistings2.

More than anything, I want that Short Description available so that I can include it in serach results etc . .

Check here:
Search Settings - 68 Classifieds

admin -> settings -> search settings:
Search results template This allows you to choose which search results you want to use. default uses showlistings.tpl and short description uses showlistings2.tpl. The option chosen here also applies to the category results.

Thanks again to y'all

I'm impressed with the support I've already had and I haven't even bought 68 yet. Goin' to pay up and download later tonight.

Leaving the building now

In terms of number 3, do you intend to have distinct databases or share one database. In other words are the adverts being placed only going to be relevant to one geography. The reason I ask is that you can make life a lot simpler for yourself than having multiple subdomains, file systems and databases if you use our location filter. This way you can have one database and the visitor filters on the geographic area.

I know it is a plug for a module but in this case I think it is justified.

I had already read about and considered using your location filter. You may be right, but one good reason for doing it the hard way is that I want to make my product look more genuinely locally based and focused than other sites that use that type of filter.

I'm hoping I'll be successful if I do it better than any competitors do. This might mean doing it the hard way.
