location as category

Hi,

What is the best way to handle having locations as categories? Basically, I only want roughly a handful of major cities per state. The users should be able to drill down geographically.

I looked at the other program, phpmy~~~~ and they do not have this capability.

To get an idea of what I am looking for, have a look at www dot businessesforsale dot com. They have done a good job being able to drill down geographically. You can even do it by the map.

IE - MIDWEST --> Ohio --> Cleveland

This is the functionality I am looking for. Any advice, or pointing me to the proper program appreciated.

My super mod system does this. Check it out in my signature. im not sure if another piece of software does this straight out of the box. It took quite a lot of programming to achieve this so if your not php savvy you may need to get a somebody to do this for you if you wanted to add this feature to a clean 68 system.

Is this the location system or do you need the entire super mod package?

Please explain how you recieved an error.

The location doesnt do this, the location system tidies up all of your locations and makes registration a lot easier.

If you were going down this path though, I would recommend that mod as a good foundation to build on top of.

Hi Maffo, I'm very interested in the Super Mod System for v4 - any idea as to when I can expect it?

Also, going back to the original posters question, what is the bext way to use categories for locations? Can you setup hierarchical categories so people can drill down to city/town level in a state?

Hi Jonah,

Im not too sure If I will make a super mod system on the v4 model.

IMHO I dont think I need to as the v3.1 runs perfectly well, no bugs, no issues.

v4 is brand new and bugs are being found within so it would be silly for me to even start a project for at least 6 months.

v4 took around a year to write, and is a cleaner coded version of 3.1. It doesnt have many extra features, only private messaging springs to mind. v3.1 has a working bulk listing system which v4 doesnt have. So during the year that 68 wrote v4, I massivley extended v3.1

My point of view is that the super mod system is for the business person who doesnt want to have to start developing. Its ready out to start marketing with straight out of the box so being 'cleaner coded' isnt of any great significance.

It comes with the Location Drill Down that require as well as a ton of features you will not find with any other Classified Ads Software

I understand. Ultimately I am after setting up an image map that links to all the locations or categories I have setup. It would be ideal if the image map was dynamically linked to the locations/cagegories but that may not be feasible.

Do you have any interested in taking a stab at a project like that? Care to provide a quick quote?
