Default Developer vs. Designer Question...ready to buy!

Hi

About to purchase...and one last question....
On the Developer version...I'm comfortable with html...but not php...
and is planning on changing layout...
table width...adding a table or two....new home page...
not viewing the horizontal categories, but keeping the categories in a folder drop down on the side....
adding banner advertising...
stuff like that...

When you say the difference is in the core file access...
what exactly do you mean...are we talking the way the final classified is viewed?

Does not make a difference to be about the pricing...because I think it is already very reasonably priced...I just do not want to be confused in layout changes if I get the developer version...

Thanks for clarifying..
Alisa

Hi Alisa,

I came from the same position. I suggest you get the developer version. It's very easy to make the html changes to the templates that you want to, plus you'll see how php works between the database and the html. I wouldn't even think of writing php from scratch, but manipulating it here and there gives you quite a bit of creative power. Plus, with all the generous individuals providing guidance on these forums, you can't go wrong. I knew practically nothing about php when I started using 68c, yet I've successively installed six modules. I've even tweaked them to my liking.

Hi Alisa-

"When you say the difference is in the core file access...

We consider the "core" files to be the php files that interact with the database and pass the necessary information to the template files.

You should be able to modify everything about the LOOK of your site with the Designer version but - I agree with Kirk - sometimes it's nice to see HOW the information is passed to the template files.

Thanks-
