Can anybody tell me, a novice, the advantage of the developer over the designer version?

May I, for instance, add code to the designer version or change the code to suit my needs ?

developer version gives you access to the underlying php files. In the designer version they are encoded so you cant edit them.

Another way to look at it is detailed functional changes are likely to require developer but with designer you can undertake mainly look and feel changes.
