Default SEO mod installation question

I watch the tutorial on istalling the seo mod. It is asking for the 1.htaccess file to be uploaded to the root and and renamed .htaccess.

I'm running V.4.04 dev and a file by the name of .htaccess already exists in the root folder.

How do I go about this? Overwrite the existing .htaccess file? The existing .htaccess file has a date of 05/28/08.

Thanks

I tried running the SEO mod without uploading the .htaccess file and I go error messages.

Any help is appreciated

Basically, do a backup of your .htaccess file just in case (ftp get and put it somewhere else on your local machine for safe keeping). Do likewise with the 1.htacces file - keep a copy of it safe somewhere else until all is well. Then rename 1.htaccess to .htaccess and upload it to replace the existing one. Things should then start to work.

Hi,
Something else might be using that .htaccess file. If i was you i would download the file on the server and post what it is inside it. Or you can even just join the two together.

Thank you for the responses. I will try it later on tonight.

What is the .htaccess file for? I just don't want to overwrite it and then find out two weeks later that the file controlled some sort of function that a quick QA test might overlook.

.htaccess files are a configuration file that is specific to a directory/folder when using the apache web server.
