Default Tips for moving 68C sites to new host.

I've been developing my sites using U.S based Hostgator for years without any problems. If your business is in the States I'd highly recommend them.

However, I've finally decided to shift my 68C, Joomla and other sites over to a UK based host. I've wanted to do this for a long time and now that 123-reg.co.uk have come up with a package that compares to American hosting I'm ready to do it. Details here. I've been buying and managing my domains from 123 for a decade and know that their service is high quality.

My question is this; What tips do you have for someone who has never moved a 68C site from one host to another?

I've read the documentation at Moving a Site - 68 Classifieds but would appreciate any other helpful advice before I take the plunge.

Many thanks,

Michael

I did the same after 3 years but had so many problems with my UK hosting which was expensive that I moved them back to Hostgator. Unles you really must, i wouldn't do it. That was 6 months ago and I have to say that I have no problems at all. To be frank, the best solution for most 68C sites if it is more than a hobby is to get a VPS with cpanel from hostgator. Geolocation is not a major issue even for SEO. You can score around 90 on the google page speed analayser with a VPS, you can also use webmaster tools and metatags in your layout to tell the search engines that your site is for a specific geography (if that is your reasoning).

The old saying Mike - don't fix something which is not broken.

Thanks for the input David. SEO and ranking are indeed my main motivators for moving but I'm a complete novice in these areas. I had always understood that the location of the servers was a BIG factor when it came to ranking but clearly I need to educate myself a little more in this area.

Again, thanks

Question

It is a factor but not one to get too hung up about. See Matt Cutts video. The point is this. Its not just about traffic from search but what you can do to keep existing customers coming back. Moreover, what do you do with the ones you have. I have been focussing on the communications to visitors.

Make sure you have this in the head section for the U.K. Tell Webmaster site maps also where you are focussing your site. Make sure links to you come from U.K. sites. The fact those links come from the U.K will make them more relevant. Get your google profiles on the U.K google map etc. Use google +1 and get English votes. Which reminds me you did not vote for my site - why not?

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-GB" />

I am focussing as much now on this as I am on search engines.

A simple email responder to visitors
