Anyone know if I can add something to userjoin to allow the registerer to select his user group?

The only option that you would have in the Designer version is the extra fields, however that still isn't going to give the option to be placed into a group. User Group placement is made by the functions within the php files based on your selections in the admin (e.g. email verification).
What is your goal? Have you made different User Groups? If so, what is it that you are doing with them or want to do with them? -Mike

Yes, I created new user groups and I want to be able to have them check a box to self designate what group they are in. Different groups will receive different newsletters, specials and promotions specific to their needs.
