Hi all - I want to be able to let users create ads that don't have a price. Which file contains the validation?

Just simply don't require the price field through your administration.

Administration/Settings/Settings/Checkout Settings
"Allow Price Field" Yes Required: NO

How can I remove the validation on the content of the field, so that it is OK with alphanumeric input?

You would need to use extra fields and remove the default price. The database has it stored as a number.
