Default Caegory values

I have several categories on my sites homepage I use to give more exposure to dog breeds, but they are simply for the extra access and ads cannot be placed in them.

Most all categories are linked to the "Search By Breeds" category. I allow people to place ads in the "Search By Breeds" category where a list of all breeds are and then draw from that with the other categories for the extra exposure.

The problem is I had my settings set to where the categories number of ads were displayed. When I linked categories to the 'Search By Breeds" category all categories linked to the "Search By Breeds" category showed a zero value even though there are ads to be accessed through that category.

I had to change my settings to stop showing the category value, because it appeared that there were no ads there. I would like for the value to reflect the number of ads that can be accessed through the category.

Thanks Much,

Ryan

Ryan,

It is going to be next to impossible for anyone to give you any type of suggestions with the information that you provided.

You need to put the version and type of 68 Classifieds you're using to start with.

You need to be much more specific in your description, such as what exactly does this mean???

What does this mean? How are you "linking" these? Do you mean you changed your categories to be subcategories of "Search By Breeds" or do mean, linked as in via HTML link <a src="Search By Breeds"> or what. I'm completely confused.

Please help us to help you by being clear in what the issue is.

Thanks,
-Mike

OK, Sorry I was not clear. Let me try to clarify. My version is 4.0.9 Hosted Developer.

The categories on the homepage that do not show the value of ads that can be accessed through that category have within them subcategories that are linked by placing the URL in the Category Link box in Administration - Categories - Manage Categories page.

The subcategories in the Homepage categories are linked to the appropriate breeds in the "Search By Dog Breeds" category. The subcategories do not show a value either.

If you visit my site and click on the "Companian, Lap and Teacup" category and then the subcategories, you will get a better idea of what I am talking about. The subcategories are giving access to the ads placed in the different breeds subcategories of the "Search By Dog Breeds" category.

Let me know if I need to further clarify and I can try.

Thanks,

Ryan

Ryan,

I can't see your example, because you didn't post a link.

When you "link" a category by URL in the admin, that category then does not allow ads to be placed in it as stated in the admin.

It sounds like (But I don't know) you have modified the original home.tpl file that is what shows your home page as well as the code that automatically lists all of your parent categories with the ad totals. I can't be of any further assistance until I can understand what you are talking about.

Correct, that category does not allow ads, but it gives access to ads listed under the "Search By Breeds" category. It should reveal the value of ads that you are able to access through it. My address is Dog2Go, FREE Classifieds, Puppies for Sale, Dogs for Sale

Thanks,
Ryan

No it shouldnt.

When an ad is posted there is a database field that holds the ID of the category its in. That is all the system knows. You added a link so the ad shows under another category but its not really in that category so it only makes sense that there is no count, how could there be? How is the system supposed to know?

I do not know how it is suppose to know, but it should be programed to pick up the value of the ads it is giving access to. By not showing a value it gives the impression that nothing is there to be accessed, therefore no one will enter the category.

Can it be programmed to pick up the value of the ads it is giving access to?

Thanks,

Ryan

In all honesty no. Category links can point anywhere and it would have to somehow relate to the db and then do the counting. The original idea behind category links was to give users more flexibility. Like link to a help section, another website, etc... It was not meant to be a link to another category even though it can be used for that.
