Default Video URL for YouTube

I know this subject has already been gone over but let me start over becuase I am confused. Sorry.

I am wanting to do 2 things -

#1 - add an extra field that supports a URL Link

#2 - allow that URL link to be a YouTube Video whereby all the user has to do is either copy/paste the URL of the video or copy/paste the code to embed the video. Which would be better to do by the way?

Please advise. Thanks.

I'm a firm believer in always keeping your visitors at your site, therefore it's my opinion that embedding would be better.

For me it is copy/paste the code to embed the video. The video can then be played within your site. That what the embed code was designed to achieve originally. The extra field text boxes can accommodate this code just fine.

The problem with that is that depening on the video a user could blow your formatting out of whack.

This is the exact reason I created the you tube mod, so you as the site admin can control the size, if it auto plays, colors etc etc.

Is there any way to modify the code for the YouTube mod so that it is applicable is some ad packages and not in others? Just as making it not applicable to a free text ad?

This really isnt anything that has to do with the you tube module. Extra fields are displayed at ad placement time based on the category thats chosen to place the ad in.

What you would have to do is edit the code that gathers the extra fields and add logic in there to check for a certain package ID and onlu display the field that holds the you tube video ID is the packageid is one where you want people to be able to have a video inline.

I don't know of any sites that charge extra to have a video (ie: embed code only) included - however I could also be wrong. If anything, the site owner chooses to include videos because it adds richness to the site. Even though you may have free ads with no pics included, it may still be a worhwhile exercise to 'initially' allow for videos to be included in free ads. My guess is that if used at all, it may only be used by very, very few .... and these will add value to your site. However, it's your call.
