Addition of new functions()

Which back-end files do I need to touch-up in order to add new functions to my classifieds system? and how to call the functions via the template files, to show up on front-end of the site?

I've done few function mod's/add's long ago, but can't recall the proceedure precisely.

... what i've tried out so far is add the function script in - includes/functions.php (so i can use it site wide), but giving me smarty errors.

On same topic, is anybody using Text Link Ads on their classifieds sites? working well?
