That being said you will need to implement some other form of communication that standard http requests to determine if someone is still on a site or not. |

As I just said above the WWW protocol is stateless. There is a request from the browser and a response form the server, thats it.
So to more specifically you can find out if a user HAS logged in but cant tell if they are still viewing your site. Thats not how the www protocol works. After someone logs in the web server has no idea if you shut your computer off or went to a different page etc. The data constantly flowing back and forth to establish and maintain a statefull conversation would be immense and the internet would have never taken off. Just like on any web based form, when you see a list of users online its not 100% accurate, its based on a time period and it simply displays a list of people who have requested a page in the last couple minutes. If someone on the active user list hasnt requested something for a couple minutes it assumes they are no longer there and name is removed from the list. So once again as I already mentioned if you want to establish a stateful connection between your client and your site you are going to have to bring some other protocol into the mix. |

Google is your friend - you will see what you are trying to do is not only difficult but plagued with problems. I have not ben able to find a sure fire technique that can be implemented. Forum software does some of what you want but it just looks at who has logged in and who has logged out. In itself that is not a very robust technique. What you really want is the type of functionality provided by skype. However, you are then into people putting software on their own machines. It gets into using protocols and all sorts of things.
