I'm not Larry, however I will explain.
localhost (On your own local computer) will generally not send email for a number of reasons. The localhost server is not generally set up as an email server, some ISP block the ability to send email directly from your machine and even have strict rules in the TOS about that which could even mean they can shut off your account for violation (think spammers!). SMTP = "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol" This is what is generally used by your local email client (ie: Outlook Express, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) to connect to your email server via "relay". Your email server could be your ISP (eg: Verizon, AT&T, Earthlink, etc.) or your web host server for web sites that you own and have an account for to serve your web pages (eg: Where you have your 68 Classifieds web site hosted) and some third party email host servers such as Google's gmail or Yahoo Mail (if you subscribe for the upgraded service). Generally, SMTP must be "authenticated" in order to use it to prevent spammers from connecting and using the email server. So, to use SMTP you need to set up the "authentication" in order to use the email service. These will be the same setup that you use in your email client on your local computer as listed above. To use SMTP in your 68 Classifieds localhost environment, login to your administration. Click on the "Settings" main tab, then your "Settings" submenu, then "Main Settings" in the list of settings displayed. In the next window, scroll down to the *Use SMTP line (Default is set to no) and use the pull down menu to set it to "yes". Next put in your SMTP settings in the lines that follow like this: These are examples of typical web hosting settings, your settings may differ!!! SMTP Server Address: mail.yoursite.com SMTP Username: your full email address ie:[email protected] SMTP Password: your password for this email address SMTP Port: 25 (This is the standardized port but may be different) Hope that helps!
