Default Pre-populated Town/City

When setting up an account you have to type in the name of your town or city which seems very basic. As this is not a massive issue we can live with this but it becomes an issue when someone uses the advanced search page the town/city drop-down is populated with whatever the user has filled in when registering.
This can create the following issues:
  • Towns with the same name appearing several times due to spelling mistakes - makes the advanced search pointless as they need to search for the same information several times!
  • Only a very small list of towns from which adverts have been placed - makes the site look small.
  • Lack of control on registration information - means someone can type anything in there and it will be displayed in the search.

Is it not possible to pre-populate this with a list like for the counties or countries?

Im sure it could be done, you would have to just alter the templates and create your own populated HTML list.

The problem with a prepopulated list is that lets say I visit your site and am looking for something and want to select a town close to my own. When I look at the list of cities I am going to be presented with a list of all cities and I have no way of knowing if there are any ads in those cities which means that I may have to do multiple searches, which is what you say you want to avoid.

True, but that is why there is the county option so that they can choose a county to encompass all towns/cities in that area or if they are specifically looking in a town then they will choose that.
My issue was if they were looking for London and someone had spelt it "london" and someone else "London" then they both would appear and this would confuse the user!

Are you saying that CaSe matters in the city list?

London and london will be in the list twice? Shouldn't be that way. Good point. I never noticed.

Of course it matters!

Yes, that is something that needs to be addressed!
