V4.1.x Sold!

I need what I think is a relative simple mod that replaces image1 or noimage.gif with a sold.gif

Seems like you could add a SOLD button to the modify ad page, add a sold field to DB and use a if/else statement where ever you get a call for image1. Of course, I'm usually wrong.

    Anybody want to tackle this?

I've read all the "sold" threads and they are much more complex solutions than I need. A sold feature is very important for my sites. JMO

I emailed you. This is not as easy as it seems. Several files need to be touched. There is also the issue of upgrade later on if you should choose to do that.

This would also be very interesting for me.

    Maybe a feature req?

We have decided to make a module to do this which will not require customization of the code. Straightforxard operation which will allow ads to be marked as sold by the advertiser or by admin. It should be ready within a few days.

    Great!

    God i like templatecodes.

If anybody is interested in a Sold! button, go to the Feedback form and vote for it:

Customer Feedback & Ideas for 68 Classifieds

68Classifieds needs a button where sellers can mark item Sold!
    Why? Ad retention.
Buyers like to browse a site with many ads, just look at Craig's List.
Sellers look and see that your site really sells things. Unless a Seller is a one shot Seller he likes to keep his contact info before the public.

An elegant watermark solution like Free2Take uses or a simple swap image1 thumb for a Sold! image would work for me.

Well, we have not done it. We have had to put it way down the priority list. We need to see a big vote for it and then we can perhaps justify it. I am sorry about that.

Is there a 'SOLD' mod, code snippets or anything to handle this YET?

Any updates on the development of this mod? I am really interested in this mod.

You can do it quite easily with templatecodes by specifying that all occurrences of 0.00 should display SOLD. One line change in our language file. This means you just need to tell the advertiser (or I guess you in this case) to update with a value of 0.00 in the price field if the item is sold. Then it will say sold in the horizontal listings, showlistings and in the viewlistings.

    Has Anyone Solved This?

Have scoured the mods available, but as far as I can see their is still no simple solution to this and its still No.1 on the requested improvements forum... is there a simple solution in site for coding plebs like me

I think David summed this up in the post right above yours.

    Hmmn, Not Quite Good Enough...

    Au contraire mon cher

I agree that this would appear to be a suitable solution, however it fails to hit the sweet spot (for me anyway) for various reasons...

i.e. It requires the advertiser to be Notified and educated to complete an action that is not contiguous to the outcome. It seems more of a workaround that they should alter the price to 0.00 in order to achieve the action. After all, where would this leave advertisers on sites where the price is always left blank or is not applicable. e.g on our own site, many services advertise simply for exposure and not for a specified and priceable service.

Is it not possible to add some functionality so that when an advertiser is in his /her back office and have the option to modify or delete an add, that they can also 'mark item as sold'.

Even in the admin back office, I can mark ads as inactive, active, delete.... why not mark as sold also?

    What are your thoughts?
  16. Lhotch curmudgeon

And how would anyone know what your "sweet spot is" without complete detailed information? Incomplete questions beget incomplete answers.

If a site is properly constructed they would be using the custom category module so they could have categories that dont even show a price field. Alternatively they would just disable the default price field and employ an extra field called "price" which could be left as optional.

No matter what method you employ you are asking the advertiser, who often pays a fee, to come back to your site and update the status of the ad. Aside from them not wanting any more calls on an item that is already sold, what incentive do they have to do this?

Getting past that obstacle requests for a sold mod have largely gone unanswered because, just like with nearly every other mod, there are a myriad of ways a site can be set up and even more ways in which site owners would like the mod to work.

From a 3rd party developer standpoint there is no reason for them to develop a mod that the majority of users cant agree on how it should work. 68C once had a membership system that was removed for the very reason that people never took the time to understand how it worked, they bought 68C because it had one an then later pissed and moaned because it dint work like they wanted it to work.

    Well Larry,

I have to admit that that was an interesting, if not somewhat curmudgeonly , reply and certainly has provided lots of ways to improve our own site and I'm sure others will also find it equally illuminating.

It seems though, that for all of us following this thread and voting for this illusive mod, that the simple answer to our request is that there are workarounds but not the quick fix we seek.

I agree that it seems unlikely that most customers would want to return to simply post 'Sold' on their ad, however putting myself in the shoes of others, as we must all do from time to time, I can see that for some their would be benefits i.e. a real estate agent wishing to stress their effectiveness by leaving visible all of their 'Results' in order to engender a sense of action. i.e. look at all these properties we've sold, you'd be mad not to instruct us.

Thanks for taking the time to reply anyway, as I say, we have taken some tidbits away to work with...

Rally the troops and get 85 people (current number of people who say they want the feature) to agree on how the mod should work and you will likely greatly expedite its way to becoming an included feature or mod.

<----- P.S. I update my custom forum title just for you
  19. EnergyFreak Customer

That is actually a good idea, we should start a poll and get the real number of people that actually want this feature to come with the next patch. This way Eric will see if it is worth doing. In which part of the forum should it be posted in?
  20. seymourjames All Hands On Deck

I can only respond again that this feature is already available to your advertiser with TemplateCodes. All they need to do is enter 0 for the price. It will then display SOLD on their advert. Alternatively, why not define an extrafield with options, for sale or sold. Either way you cut it, the advertiser has to come back to the site and mark the item as sold.
