Re-Downloading?

    Hello,

Been a while since I've used 68Classifieds. The original site I purchased the license for fail through the internet cracks, so I have another use for it. I purchased the license back on 10-31-2006 (order #3509) and purchased an upgrade/support extension on 3-21-2008 (order #6125). When I login to my account and go to downloads, I can not download anything. Since it's been a while, my hosting company has since changed and my compter formatted, so I don't have the script downloaded anymore.

Do I have to purchase an upgrade to re-download? Even if it's the old version I had, and not the latest?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

Not my decision but realistically you should upgrade if only for the improvements, enhancements, bug fixes and security fixes.

We don't keep repositories of outdated scripts. Upon purchase, you have access to downloads of the latest version for six months. We recommend that you keep a fresh copy if you don't intend to renew.

David mentioned the upgrades and features but it's likely that a version from 2006 or 2008 would be riddled with php compatibility problems anyway.

    Well, that kinda stinks.

Not trying to be a pain in the behind here, but what is read under the FAQ's is somewhat misleading then. "If you purchase the Developer or Designer edition then you can use it forever with out any additional fees." I originally purchased the designer edition, so I figured I'd have the ability to use it forever. Don't get me wrong, I see as I'l still able to use it. I'm just now no longer able to truly use it because it no longer exists. Maybe 68Classifieds should keep all build versions on hand, for something like this.

I suppose I'll just pass on this then, as seeing I'm not sure if my site idea would fully even be a success. I understand I could update, but I don't see myself purchasing an update, as I've already spent $200 on this script.

There is nothing misleading in that statement whatsoever. You certainly can use it forever without any additional fees. It is certainly not the responsibility of a software developer to keep a back up of your purchases.

Contact Microsoft and see if they'll provide you with a free copy of Microsoft Office that's 6 versions old, because you didn't make a backup of your investment or you lost the cd/dvd that it came on. In addition, guess what? That old version of Microsoft Office won't run on a modern machine with the current version of Windows or Mac OS either. It will still run forever on the machine and compatible OS at the time that you purchased it though.

Like I said, I'm really not trying to be a pain in the rear. Please note though, I said somewhat misleading. I wasn't saying it's utter false advertisement. If I were to lose my copy of Microsoft Office, you are correct. However, I'd also be able to download the trial version of Office from Microsoft and use my serial to activate it as a full version.

I'm fully aware it is not 68Classifieds' fault for me no longer having access to the script. I was simply saying that it stinks paying $200 for a script and not being able to have access to use it, that is all. Maybe, perhaps, what I've said can be a possibility for future customers. I enjoyed the short amount of time I was able to use it, it's a pretty good product.

Do you think it is unreasonable to get a support contract so your license key will work and you get a product that will work too?
  8. Mike-N-Tosh Developer & Moderator

Really, seriously, you actually believe that??? Good luck with that then.

Hmmm... I still have my Microsoft serial number from when it used to come on 14 floppy disks... Good to know! (Also have a backup of those too!)

Seriously, You do own a valid license (or at least you claim that you do) for an older version of 68 Classifieds. For only $49.95 you can purchase a new 6 month support agreement, which of course also includes the ability to download the latest FULL version of the software.

I personally don't know of any software company out there that would allow you to upgrade that old a version of software for anywhere near that kind of price AND include official support. Many of the software companies don't even provide you a full new version of the software, they require you to have your original software and provide an update/upgrade only version to use on the original. Also provide you with a new serial number for the newer version as your OLD SERIAL number won't work with the upgraded version.

Not to split hairs but....The license and script always work... forever. (barring upgrades to the server - which is beyond our control). It is not required that a customer upgrade... ever. Once an installation is working, it will always work (unless as previously stated, the installation environment changes or someone customizes the code).

Confusion stems from not understanding that a 'lifetime license' does not mean 'lifetime access to downloads'. If a customer purchases the script and saves an original copy, there's never a problem.
