Which is why l am looking for a simple solution whereby they input their email address and are part of our newsletter.
  2. Lhotch curmudgeon

You seem to be missing the point totally.

And as a competitor of yours I grab random mail addresses and input their mail address into the newsletter form. Creating a whole bunch of extra mail you have to serve as well as pissing a lot of people off at you because they personally didnt put themselves on your list. They get you black listed and perhaps files complaints with your ISP so they drop you.

Thanks lhotch, l do understand your point and appreciate your comments. I am considering narrowing down the registration details to see if this works. I am slightly concerned that based on your statement the majority of the internet and the companies that reside on it are running their newsletter signup completely wrong which includes the likes of CNET, Amazon and so forth.
As my market is fairly niche, my competitors would not waste their time in such activites as l wouldnt on their site. In time when my service increases and l am driving more traffic then l will have to deal with this issue in the best way l can.

Overal, it appears that there is no easy way to integrate the facility to just allow individuals to add their email address to the newsletter, therefore my only option is to install a separate newsletter program or to cut down the registration form and force users to complete a full registration.
If anyone has an alternative then l would appreciate the feedback.

    Regards,
    Luke

    Luke,

This newsletter module is set to work only off the user registration. However there are other newsletter scripts that are a lot more powerful than this, that could be installed on your site.
  5. Lhotch curmudgeon

It doesnt have to be a competitor it can be some bored script kiddie. My point is you should strive to become part of the spam solution not part of the spam problem.

Most places that allow you to register for a newsletter without registering require you to send mail from your own e-mail account. This ensures that mail is delivered to someone who requested it. Simply filling in a web form doesnt allow for any authentication.

    Not regenerating

I extracted and uploaded the newsletter file/module to the modules folder, but when I click regenerate it does not list the newsletter module. When I look at the remote view of the folder it looks like it is setup right. What might be wrong?

    Thank you!

    HTML:

    feature request for futur versions

    Hello everybody involved!

Today I wanted to try the newsletter system the first time (that we already have installed for more than 18 month) and found out (after 6 hours newsletter design work!!! ) that my normally excellent hosting provider (hostgator.com) restrict the use of mailings to 500 mails per hour.

We have about 3000 registered users and this makes it for us impossible to use this system.
Other newsletter systems like for example Phplist found a way to throttle the mails and only send a given amount of mails at a given time.

This would be very useful for the next update of the newsletter module and you maybe could consider this a feature request.
  10. metrony Customer

Anything more than 500 from HostGator will just bounce.

"There is a 500 hourly outgoing email limit per domain on all shared servers. This limit is also applied towards mailing lists. If you send over this amount in any hour, the e-mails will fail and may bounce back with a undeliverable error."

Throttling would be ideal or a way to hook this into another mailing list program like Aweber, GetResponse, etc.

    Hello metrony.

Yes, that's why I thought it might by a helpful feature for future versions of this addon. I guess not only hostgator has this sort of security setup to protect us from SPAM.
I also had some trouble with links inside the newsletter content so looking for some external script is the way to go right now.

I decided to use the excellent, free "phplist" script which works very, very well.
Now, all I need is to find a way to import all registered C68 users:

    - email addresses
    - Name
    - want mail or not
    - html or Text format

    into phplist's database tables.

    Getting off topic here

e-mail is just one of the reasons not to skimp on a hosting plan. Professional sites require not only a professional presentation but aprofessional class server/environment. When you get a $5 a month hosting plan you get what you pay for.

That being said check out the documentation on exporting users from 68C.

You'll have to go dedicated and that's a big pill to swallow when you're first starting out. The newsletter mod isn't a 68c strong point (and it shouldn't be) so I'm going to try and get this to work with GetResponse using their API. I found another post on the forum where someone got it to work so I'm hoping it's relatively easy.

text portion blank, html headers and footers

I just added the newsletter mod and my testing reveals (as rockonguys1 reports) that the text portion of the email is blank... wheatever you put into the text box of the admin isn't actually added to the email that is sent out.

    Also -
I'd like to utilize the html mail header and footer used by the other emails send from the system. Since those templates already exist in /templates/xxxxxx/emails/html/mail_header.tpl and ...mail_footer.tpl, couldn't those be easily utilized by the newsletter module?

    Thanks,
    Jim

This module is 4 years old at this point. There have been many major releases of 68 since this was made.

This is not even an offered module any longer (e.g. not sanctioned by 68 Classifieds).
  17. HotAir Customer

    Hi Mike,

So is there a way to utilize a simple mass mailing function from within 68c that is more current?

    Thanks,
    Jim

It means you will need to debug/modify it to work with newer versions of 68C because officially it is not supported. My point though would be - why not consider two other emailing strategies.

    1. Active emailing - http://www.68classifieds.com/forums/customizations/10796-simple-email-responder-visitors.html . You can do some pretty clever things using this approach to those which make any contact with the site and not just registered users. Every visitor to my site making a contact to the seller gets an email from me marketing other things. The emails of buyers and sellers are stored for email marketing purposes. always let people unsubscribe of course.

    2. There are proper email marketing programs out there. The best one is shown on my site under applicatons (a product by Interspire). It is without doubt the best you will find but not cheap. It depends if you are serious about email marketing or just looking to send out the occasional newsletter..

    Thanks for the thoughts.

i do have another mailing list system I use but to do so I need to export the users names and emails from 68c then import them into my other program. The classifieds are just a small portion of the interaction with visitors on my site and there are times it is appropriate to send some info on updates and improvements to just those who are registered in the classified system. Being able to do so from within 68c would be easier than moving the data to another external mailing program.

    Thanks,
    Jim
