Hi I am planning on starting up another site, but I want users not to have to register. The idea is that they can post an ad without registering an account as I find registering an account deters people (for the type of site I am looking at). There doesn't appear to be much on the forums regarding this that I can find. As far as I can find, there isn't a simple setting in the admin pannel to disable registration (I am using version 4.2.0) unless this is part of the newest version. Any help with this? I know I could just start chopping at the code, but was wondering if there is an easier fix as chopping the code isn't the easiest task as there are a lot of different pages that would need to be edited. I am hoping I have just missed something and there is an easy fix, or setting, for this. Cheers Steve
There is no setting for this and for good reasons. First off, placing ads on a site without any registration/verification of the sellers will be destined to be a SPAMMERS heaven full of porn, viagra, phishing site links and what not in no time at all. All ads are tied to a user, to track the order (transaction purchase), as well as the listing itself, to allow communication with the seller both for admin as well as any potential buyer to contact them for questions or to purchase.
Mike I agree with you on principle, but to combat spammers, listings would require email verification before posting and admin moderation. At the moment it is an idea. The issue is, people don't want to register. The site I am looking to build is going up against Facebook pages etc, whereby people are used to 'quick and easy'. Unfortunately, I don't think this script can do what I need without me doing some mass editing. There are free scripts that do what I need, but in comparisons to the power of 68c, they a crap. I think someone who is willing to go through email verification wouldn't have a problem going through the existing registration process. I understand there are markets where people will want to be anonymous or won't likely be a repeat visitor, but in general if a site's service is attractive or provides enough value, most users will go through the process of registering. Removing the authentication and registration process would require a lot of work, so if you are sure that having registration is an obstacle that your service or content can't overcome I think you'll need to find another script for the time being. This idea has been asked for enough so I think some accommodation for it in future versions is worth doing, but its impractical with the system as its now designed.
John Thanks. At the moment it is all in the idea phase. Something to make the site different from everyone elses. It could be useful to offer a disable registration option. Nothing against the 68c script either, I use it on my main site and love it. The best of the lot I reckon. Cheers Steve
