Adding the word new to listing just added

Hi all,

Whilst browsing the threads I came accross this great looking idea for showing a message like "New" or "just added" for listing added within a certain time frame

however I think it is a little out of date now because of all the upgrades, it would be a great feature to have I have added part of the code to categories.php but im at a loss as to where to place [[showmessage]] as I cannot find the files subcategories.tpl.php .
