search.tpl adding required to cat dropdown

Hi all,

Just wondering in search.tpl, whether it is possible to make the category drop down list set required (as in the searcher must choose a category from the list ?)

Form validation is generally done in one of two ways. You use javascript on the client or you have the backend server check for field contents and report back if a field is blank/invalid.

javascript has the benefit of checking before the user submits the form where as the server side cant be done until the form is submitted to the server. Since you have hosted version you cant modify the backend script so you will have to do some searching on the web for javascript form validation and try and employ that method.
