Default Google showing internal links

If you do a search on google you often find the top website has some links to various parts of it shown under its description like this.

Is this anything to do with ranking, and more importantly how is this done - I have no idea what to search on as I don't know what its called!!

If you signup for Google webmaster tools you can see these as "Site Links". However it seems to be automated on what they include. For example if you search for us:
http://www.google.com/search?q=68+cl...ient=firefox-a

You will see one link that says "Mark Forums Read". I have no idea why they picked that up instead of just forums.

It is called "snippets site links". According to Cutts snippet site links is completely algorithmic. The algorithm is picking up the sites. It is hard to determine how this done. I saw somewhere on the net that somebody was trying to do some kind of research. According to this research it looks like involves the traffic patterns and may be the Google toolbar data. Defiantly Google showing it only for the most trusted sites in certain search results.
