Default Multiple sites question

I have read many posts here that deal with multiple sites running on the same server using the same database, and have successfully set one up myself, but I have a question.

Has anyone set up a second site, which use the same database, where all of the menu items show, and search JUST the category that the site is designed for?

I've visited many of the multiple sites indicated in the forum, but each seems to display and use ALL the categories in things like the search function, which will display all the listings in the entire database even though the site is designed for one category.

I want to be able to break my site down into sub-domains so that folks can go just to those specific sites and see just those listings that are in that category even though ALL the listings for all the sites go into the same database. That way, I can still have the main site for everyone to see everything, and have those sub sites for those only wishing to see a particular category.

Is this possible?

Thanks.

The only way to do that which is not that easy is to manually go in and change almost every query to select from that parent category.

I would go at it another way. Make a copy in the subdomain. Then edit the browse links to just go directly to the parent category you want. Then get rid of the category link on the breadcrumb. Then force the search to default to the parent category and don't show the drop down box i did something like this in Version 4.09). Likewise in the checkout - default it and don't show the step. What you need to be careful about is your ad packages - that they do in fact cover the categories they are meant to. I am trying to thing why this approach would not work.

Thanks Guys. I will work on it, as I would like to have each sub-domain look like, and act like a totally different site, but still keeping the main site intact, which contains ALL the listings.

If anyone else has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate the input.
