Can you please advise of what the filenames are that would be affected to modify the columns on the homepage.

modify what columns? Using the smarty debug command in your layout file will show you all the template variables and in turn files used.....in most cases.

right now there are 2 columns so the home page looks like this

X represents a category name.

I would like it to display like this:

So you are talking about table columns in the table that displays the categories?
