Default discount code question

I had set up 2 discount codes to be used by registered users and administrators. They worked fine when submitting a new listing.

HOWEVER .... I went back in to see how the discount code would work when "UPGRADING" a current listing, and when I put in the discount code and hit submit, the program gave me an error saying that the code was not valid. The code is good until dec 31, 2009. I tried it several times with the same response error.

SO..... I went in and changed both discount codes to coupon codes and they worked. I didn't change anything else. The "Upgrade" function says that you can enter a coupon or discount code.

Is this not the case? does "Upgrade" only allow coupon codes?

When you have a discount it gets automatically applied to a sale. Coupon codes however need to be entered in the form field.

Try renewing an ad for a user that has an active discount and during the renew process you should see the discount being applied and the resulting upgrade price.

Just to verify. And I did re-read the article you attached.

In other words, if I create a discount and apply it to registered users, ALL registered users will get this discount even if they don't put in the discount code when checking out, is that correct? And even if they put in the code, it really doesn't mean anything during the checkout, right again?

The form field is a bit misleading. On the admin side of things you can create a coupon or a discount. A coupon can be for a fixed value or a percentage.

The form field at checkout Asks for coupon or discount code and is only used for "Coupons" whether they be fixed dollar amount of percentage.

If you create a discount via admin, its automatically applied if the discount applies to that user because they are in the same user group etc.

Just to add to my above post. Think of a coupon just like you would a physical store coupon. You get a coupon out of the paper and have to bring it in and present it at checkout. The coupon could be good for a fixed dollar amount off or a percentage of the sale.

A discount would be like a store advertising a going out of business sale, all items 10% off. Everyone who buys something gets a discount automatically without presenting a coupon.

Exactly. A much better way of describing the functions.

Thanks guys.

It was just really unclear the way it was written. If it was originally written the way you just put it Larry, there would have been no confusion, at least in my mind. Discount to everyone in a user group, coupon if you want to use it. The other way, it sounded like they were the same thing.

Thanks again Larry.
