Default Hw to change $ to ?

Hi All,

I have just bought the designer version and the mods package.

My classifieds is niche and will have a worldwide audience.

How does payment work? I want UK visitors to see prices in and USA visitors to see $ etc

Please advise. If UK customer see $ it will be very offputting (and vice versa)

Many Thanks

Gary

Gary, as outlined in the documentation you set the sites currency symbol in admin under site settings.

Regional Settings - 68 Classifieds

This is a single site wide value.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Sadly that seems to render this solution pretty useless to me. UK people seeing a US currency symbol will assume its a US site. The same goes with a UK symbol.

What a shame.

How is the site supposed to know what symbol to display? What happens if you dont enter a currency symbol in admin at all and then create an extra field thats a dropdown that has the currency in it? Then users who place ads can select the currency they use?

I imagines that visitors enter the site and select a flag based on where they are. This then only displays the listings from their country and in the correct currency.

If I set the default as $, all UK visitos will see the prices in $ and will have to doa manual currency conversion for every item they are interested in.

I have spent weeks looking at the 3 main classifieds systems and set this one as the one I wanted, so I am really hoping the plan isnt going to fall down at such an early stage

Many Thanks

Gary

The only really easy way to this is display a site wide currency say pounds sterling and then right next to it put a currency convertor. You place an icon for that in showlistings and view listings.

There are lots of convertors out there which are free to use as forex companies are only to pleased to get your business.

There is another way to do it but it is quite longwinded. I will think about it.

To me it seems a bit silly to have a single site server multiple currencies and locations if you are going to filter content for the user anyway.

Why not just create a main splash page, direct people to either a UK site or US site depending on where they are at, then just run 2 copies of the script, one for UK and one for US.

Aside from listing ads in different currencies you are also going to have issues with charging people a fee for placing ads using different currencies.

Thats an option, but i dont know how good it would be from a visitors point of view (and an SEO point of view)

That is a good point Larry. What are people paying in. Paypal will do the conversion for example but you will need to also show the advertising prices (normally anyway). Only easy way is to use a currency convertor in the template files to at least make the conversion to hand (seem to remember an automatic one where people don't need to type in the value either). Did it on a boats for sale site.

Looking at ebay, people don't have problems looking at items in a currency which is not their own. Most people know roughly what the conversion rates for pounds, dollars and euros are. And if they are interested they will certainly find out quickly. I think the big issue you will have is actually with the advertiser. If I am selling something from France I will naturally want to quote my price in euros. I will not want to calculate it in pounds, just so I can enter into the system. I will want to put it in euros.

Just as important, how dos one filter content based on country? If it cant be done with the database query it has to be done at the code level. Then you must consider where its done and how it may effect pagination etc.

All in all I think the approach and desired outcome is not practical.
