Default Dymanic Category Selection Multi-Level

I would like to seperate my category selection (for search and create new listing) into multiple drop downs because of the amount of categories I have that are populated based on the mysql categories table.

For example,

search

Category (user selects category cars)
Subcategory for cars, models (user selects cadillac)
subcategory for models shows (deville, escalade, cts, ect.)

like the search on this show case AutoOutlet.co.uk - Everything Automotive - AutoOutlet - Everything AutoMotive

anyone have any code or advice?

I have been looking around at ajax examples

Ive done using ajax and dropdowns for a client but anything beyond 2 levels deep (parent cat with one child cat) caused all sorts of problems in different browsers.

I use maffo's search module to do this on my site. But it can only go two deep in IE(6,7), it is unlimited in firefox, safari and ie8.

Maffo does not seem to be around nowadays - I have not seen or heard from him in months.

A feature like this is very helpful for me too. Two layers would be enough for me (parent and then 1 child).
