Default Beginner blues

v4.0.9 Developer

The program is working wonderfully but I'm unable to get anything beyond the basic program to work. I'm having trouble getting a plugin to work (another thread), and now I'd like to try to edit my templates.

Doing a little research on templates I came across this:

If you look at your site and see another page you would like to modify but are unsure which template file it is you can add
{debug}
to the layout.tpl file. Then visit the page again and a pop up will appear giving you information about the template files in use as well as a list of all the variables available for the page.

So I put {debug} into layout.tpl and nothing happens. No popups at all popped up

I tried putting it in the <head> section and then the <body> section, cleared templates_c, refreshed several pages in IE6 and Firefox.

Anyone have any ideas

If your browser is set to block pop up windows, then no window will be shown. Check your browser settings. Another easier way (IMHO) is to simply add &debug=1 to the url. (ie: www.yoursite.com/index.php?&debug=1). Again your browser must be set to accept pop up windows.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Mike!

Luckily, I did think to allow pop-ups before trying it.

It was later on when a friend went to log-in and told me he was getting this strange pop-up on his screen. I rushed over to see what he was talking about and saw that he'd get the pop-up if he clicked on a text-link. (like login)

I went back and tried that, and sure enough, I got the pop-up.

I honestly thought that just refreshing the page would cause the pop-ups to appear after putting in the debug code, but apparently not.

And although I clicked on several links in the main nav bar, no pop-ups appeared.

So I guess that I just didn't click the right things to get the popups to appear.

BTW, I like your method of adding the debug instruction to the URL much better! You don't have to modify your file (and maybe forget to remove the debug command later).

Thanks very much!
