Default Featured Listings (again)

Is there a way to control 'featured listings' on the search results pages?

The reason I ask is that assuming most users will not delete an add after an item sells and I'd prefer to not have their dead listings appear at the top of serach results. Or at the very least, do the featured lsitings appear in accordance to latest featured listings.

Or, is the bottom line most users search via categories and don't use the search function; at which point it wouldn't matter since featured listings aren't displayed there.

Might be a confusing question...Sorry.

I dont understand what your getting at.

I agree people wont delete sold listings unless they get contacted so much it becomes annoying BUT this is not isolated to just featured ads so I dont understand how/why you think doing something (what im not sure) with the featured ads will have any effect on anything.

Larry - I understand your confusion since I tend to complicate things. I guess I was just looking at things from a member experience and not an owner/programmer stand point.

Adding to my position is the fact that I want to have 31 day listing run times to increase listing volume at the beginning. Again, this would contribute to the possibility of having 4-8 dead listings at the top of every search.

As a user, I'd like to know that the content is fresh. I'd like to know that 6-8 featured listings at the top of my search results aren't stale (pretty much impossible, I know)

I know I am making a mountain out of a mole hill and the bottom line is I am sure CL (even w/out featured listings) doesnt worry about these things. I tend to over-think the online user experience after spending 7 years as an executive with AOL trying to get back to the glory days.

Thanks for the reply though Larry, I appreciate it.

Go into admin -> settings -> search settings and change the initial sort order from featured / descending to something else.

It still doesnt mean any of the ads are still available but at least the featured ads wont appear first. However, some people like to charge extra for featured ads AND as an added incentive will let people know that featured ads will appear 1st in searches.
