Default New client, need membership help.

Hi guys,

Please bear with me as I am very new to the 68 Family -- just purchased today, actually. I am relatively new to web hosting, etc, so you may need to speak slowly (or loudly), and simply to help me. Thanks in advance for that.

Anyhow, I am interested in setting up memberships so that a member can buy, say, a year of a subscription and place unlimited ads. From what I gathered with V3.whatevers, there was a modification you could download (similar to phpBB mods?)? I have done some searches through the forums but have yet to find instructions that are as clear as I need in order to set up memberships as mentioned above (further, vbulletin and I have never really gotten along, lol).

I was wondering if anyone could offer any assistance? Am I even able to add memberships with Designer? Since I just purchased today, I immediately downloaded V4 because it was the newest, without realizing that it might cause me some troubles. There are things like the private messaging system, that I really want but definitely need the membership option as well.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Amanda

Are you working with V3 or V4? According to the release announcement for V4 the membership portion has been removed.

Please note: We decided to remove the memberships system totally from v4 because of the issues we have had with them. If this is a must need then you should use v3.1 as they are included with it. In the future they may be added back as part of the core or as a module but we do not have any dates or time estimates.

Hi Larry,

I have been messing around with it all night and now, on the purple layout, it gives me the option to "purchase a membership" (www.canadianneigh.com/classifieds once you log in) -- when you click on purchase a membership, it brings me to another page where it says

"Please select a package below
Sorry, no packages have been defined."

When I add a new listing package, this is what I see, so you would assume that it is adding it for a membership:

But of course when I go to "purchase a membership", I get the same 'no packages have been defined' message.

Seems strange that they would leave all that in there if the memberships haven't been included in this version. :P Too bad because it looks so easy that way (if it were to work!).

What "neat features" does the V3.mostrecent have that V4 does not have that I will miss out on, if I have to go back to the earlier version?

Thanks in advance,
Amanda

There are advantages to both systems. v4 has some new features such as a better admin and private messaging. v3 however has thousands of pages of support on this forum and many mods already built. If you 100% need memberships then I would go for v3. The membership system needs a couple of tweaks but the code is posted on this board by errmmmm... me!!

You can find it here.

I noticed that, Maffo. I am familiar with the MOD'ing of phpBB's, so I think I can probably handle adding the membership here. I guess all hope is not lost as they say that V4 may eventually have the memberships... but yes, my site, in order to stay competitive with what others offer in this particular market, is 100% in need of memberships.

When I "downgrade", maffo, will the membership portion already be installed, or is that something I am going to have to get into via your download? Or just the tweaks?

And I can do all of this with Designer, right?

TIA,
Amanda

If you downgrade and its just a case of installing a new version, all you will need to is replace the files from the original version with those from the download

Haha, too late for that. Cleared the slate and starting new. Probably for the best, anyways. All of this ftp and coding such is far too complicated and "math like" for a lit snob like me.

I guess I will be up all night but that's okay, nothing new!
