Template variables and sub categories

Hi. I have 2 questions:

1. Is there any documentation on what variables you can use on what template pages?

2. I would like to create an unordered list which reflects the categories and sub categories. Is there an easy way to do this from the DB? And it would also be nice for the nested lists only to be displayed when you're in the category/sub category. Any help with this would be appreciated. I am going through the smarty functions and template files now, seeing if I can do it myself, but I've only just picked up 68 Classifieds.

The variables chenge depending on the site so there isnt a documented list perse. You can however place the following at the top of your layout.tpl.php file to cause the smarty debug console window to pop up and show you all the variables used.

{DEBUG=true}

alternatively you can append debug=true to the URL string in your browser.
