Default Overwriting changed files instead of upgrading. Is this okay?

The changes from v4 rc7 to v4 rc8 are:
  • administration
    • listings.php
    • fields.php
    • templates/listing_edit.tpl.php
    • includes/init.php
    • includes/params.php - New
  • includes/
    • classes/kernel/Key.php
    • classes/kernel/Listings.php
    • core/memberships/step1.php
    • init.php
    • params.php - New
  • language
    • english.php
  • templates/
    • default/layout.tpl.php
How safe is it to just overwrite these files (and add the two new ones) rather than go through the upgrade procedure? I am just anxious to preserve all my hacked files.

Yes and that is why the changelog is included. Also keep in mind you do still need to run the upgrade steps from yoursite.com/setup/

Can you tell me what this actually does considering that the files have already been overwritten?

Thanks.

That makes any needed db changes and updates your current version number.
